Admission Process

Applicants may apply for admission to commence study in any one of the three trimesters each year. Applications may be submitted at any time and will be considered for any nominated trimester for which the closing date has not expired.

Selection Criteria

The MBA programme is academically rigorous and demands personal characteristics of high motivational levels, maturity, above-average intellectual ability and a commitment to success and managerial leadership. Our aim is to provide the opportunity to achieve success in a competitive environment to those men and women with the professional experience, motivation and drive to perform at high management levels. For this reason selection of MBA candidates is not based solely on academic criteria. Applications for admission to the MBA will be considered on their merit.

Applicants for admission to the MBA shall have:

  1. Fulfilled all the requirements for admission to a degree or equivalent qualification at this or another acceptable university or tertiary institution, and evidence of at least one year's relevant professional experience

OR Have demonstrated academic or professional standing considered by the University to be equivalent to the above

  2. English language proficiency
  3. Any other evidence of aptitude necessary to succeed in the programme e.g. references, awards, social or business achievements

Applicants without an undergraduate degree, who meet the admission criteria, will be admitted to the Graduate Certificate in Business Administration stage of the MBA programme. On successful completion of four units they can then progress to the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration and then to the MBA.

Advanced Standing

Advanced Standing (i.e. a reduction in the number of units required to be completed for the award) may be granted where a candidate has successfully completed units which are substantially equivalent in content, standard and duration to units offered in the MBA programme provided that these units have not been counted towards a completed tertiary award. Advanced Standing may be granted for up to 50 percent of the programme to which you are admitted. Applicants seeking Advanced Standing for previous studies must lodge with the application for admission:

  • A statement outlining the basis of your application for Advanced Standing for previous studies undertaken

Detailed course outlines of previous studies and certified copies of transcripts of results must accompany applications for Advanced Standing.

In recognition of full NZICA membership, Southern Cross University will award Advanced Standing for five (5) units towards an MBA. Generally these units are: ACC00724, ECO00720, LAW00720 plus two (2) unspecified electives. Three (3) units of Advanced Standing will be awarded for ACA membership - these are ACC00724, ECO00720 and LAW00720.

Proof of membership needs to be included with your application.
