Choosing Your Programme
There are no prerequisites to core or elective units but you should note in the unit descriptions where it is recommended that certain units be taken before others. Your MBA programme can be selected in consultation with the NZ Director.
The Core Units
It is recommended that you take the unit, Foundations of Management, early in your programme. Foundations of Management is a broad introduction to the field of management and provides a good grounding for more specialised units. The unit, Strategic Management, is a capstone unit and it is recommended that you take this unit in the latter stages of your programme. Those who have studied core unit subject matter as part of previously completed university courses may apply to SCU for exemption from the relevant core unit(s) and take units from the elective list in their place.
The Elective Units
The supported elective units available in New Zealand represent a number of different areas of management.
Academic Year
In line with trends for shorter duration, high-intensity management education programmes, the MBA programme provides the opportunity for accelerated progress through a three-trimester calendar year. Trimesters commence in January, May and September. Each trimester is of 15 weeks duration (13 weeks study period and two weeks examination period). A general guide to the duration of the trimester year is as follows:
- Trimester A mid January to late April
- Trimester B early May to mid August
- Trimester C early September to mid December
A break of one week occurs between Trimesters A and B and again between Trimesters B and C. A break of five weeks occurs between the end of Trimester C and the start of Trimester A in the next year.
Study Load
You will need to plan and manage your time wisely in undertaking this course of study. There are 1800 learning hours in the MBA programme. These learning hours are spread across 12 units. Each unit is designed to be completed in about 150 learning hours spread over a trimester study period of 13 weeks.
The 150 hours includes time to read the study guide and relevant sections in the textbook and associated readings, to participate in teletutorials and workshops, consult with your tutor and colleagues, conduct research where necessary, successfully undertake the assignments, and prepare for examinations. You will need to make a commitment of time and effort for the assignments to be completed on time. Part time candidates generally enrol in either one or two units each trimester. If you choose to take two units each trimester you can complete the programme in two years. Choosing one unit each trimester will mean you will on average have a study load of about ten to twelve hours per week. It is recommended that if you are uncertain as to how much time you will have available to devote to your study that you enrol in one unit only.

Exit Points
The programme offers two early exit points. The Graduate Certificate in Business Administration requires candidates to complete any four (4) units and the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration requires candidates to complete any eight (8) units. There are no compulsory units required for the awards of Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma in Business Administration.
