Learning Materials
The package of learning materials for each unit is a key part of the overall learning experience. For each unit, students will receive a study guide which presents the material to be covered and which is written around one or more textbooks. A booklet of relevant journal articles and other readings will also be provided.
The study guide is designed to guide candidates through the subject matter in a systematic and structured way, using features such as hierarchical headings and bold font to highlight key concepts and terms. It directs candidates when to read the textbook and supplied readings, and when to undertake various types of activities.
The study guide, readings and textbooks together do much of the "teaching" of the unit material. The study guide also contains self-assessment questions to help candidates check their progress as they study. There is no additional charge to candidates for the study guides and textbooks provided.
Teaching and Learning Methods
The study guide contains a recommended schedule of study to be undertaken to ensure completion of all study tasks by the relevant due dates. The schedule details the content to be covered week by week.
The learning resources (study guide, textbooks and readings) are integrated with teletutorials and, in many cases, workshops, in which candidates may interact directly with academic staff and fellow MBA candidates studying the same units.
Candidates are also assigned tutors for each unit they undertake. The tutors are experienced, well qualified academic staff, who are easily contacted by telephone, facsimile or email to answer any queries you may have as you work your way through the study material.
In addition to the print materials and the tutorial support outlined above, students have access to an online website dedicated to each unit of study. These websites, accessed through Southern Cross University's "MySCU" facility, provides additional up-to-the-minute information and an opportunity for communication between students and between students and tutor.
Study Facilities
Candidates are admitted to the MBA programme on the understanding that they have access to and are proficient in the basic use of a computer.
While this is not critical for most units, several units utilise software that assumes the availability of this standard of equipment. Assignment format and presentation are expected to conform to acceptable business standards and would normally be expected to be word processed or utilise appropriate software.
The Southern Cross University library catalogues, online full-text business journal databases, and the University website are facilities available to students via the Internet. Students also have access to distance education services through the Manukau Institute of Technology Library, including databases via the Internet.
Assessment and Examinations
The MBA programme has been designed to incorporate progressive assessment and examinations.
Candidates will be assessed in each unit on the basis of written and oral assignments. These may be essays, research papers, video or audio presentations, case analyses, or problem solutions. Full details of assignments are contained in the study guide for each unit.
The usual weighting of assessment marks between assignments and examinations is about 50 percent to each. A minimum raw score of 40 percent in the final examination is mandatory to pass a unit.
Graduation
The major Lismore campus graduation ceremonies are usually held on two occasions in April/May and August/September. These ceremonies enable graduates to experience the traditional splendour that has for centuries acknowledged the milestone of completion of a university award.
Graduands who are unable to attend the graduation ceremony may opt to graduate in absentia and thereby not have to wait until the graduation ceremony to obtain their testamurs. Manukau Institute of Technology will include all eligible students in their own Graduation (usually held in May).
Teaching Staff
The highly qualified and experienced academic staff are committed to the provision of high quality education and have a real understanding of the diverse range of skills required for success in modern business.
