The National Certificate in Retail (Level 3) provides the knowledge, skills and attitude relating to staff, customers, products, communication and administration in a retail environment. People who achieve this qualification also have the ability to undertake a range of retail tasks at a supervisory level.

This is programme is run as part-time study over a six month period and is a mixture of interactive workshops, work-based training and self directed study. Courses include Communications, Stock Control, Customer Service and Enhanced Work Practices.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must meet the following:

  • Have 8 NCEA credits in English at Level 1 or equivalent
    OR
  • National Certificate in Retail Level 2
    OR
  • Have six months retail or relevant customer service experience. These applicants will be required to provide evidence to support this.
    And
  • Be currently working or actively seeking employment in the retail industry.
    And
  • Have English language competence to undertake this programme which is delivered in English. Any applicant whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of an ELTS (academic) band score of 5.5 with no band below 5.00 or equivalent.

Selection Requirements
Where the programme is oversubscribed, applicants that have met the entry criteria will be enrolled on a first come, first served basis.

Interview Process
All applicants will be interviewed. This interview will provide an opportunity to discuss the programme structure and clarify the applicants' career path expectations to ensure their choice of programme is correct. Secondly to ensure that candidates are able to complete the required work based assessment. Whanau support will be encouraged during the interview process.

Cost

Free to citizens and residents of New Zealand and Australia aged 16 years or over. Please note that if after completion of this programme you would like to apply for your National Certificate in Retail (Level 3) award, a National Application Fee of $15.00 applies.

This area of learning allows you to:

Stock Control
This area of learning allows you to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of stock management, procedures and systems in a retail or distribution environment
  • Maintain and take care of stock
  • Receive inwards goods in a retail or distribution environment.

Customer Services
This area of learning allows you to:

  • Apply skills and qualities of a salesperson in a retail or distribution environment
  • Respond to customers’ complaints face-to-face in a retail or distribution environment
  • Enhance work practices by the application of product and or service knowledge
  • Respond to customers’ complaints by telephone in a retail or distribution environment
  • Sell goods or services over the telephone
  • Serve customers face to face in a wide range of contexts.

Enhanced Work Practices
This area of learning allows you to:

  • Apply safe work practices in the workplace
  • Maintain and integrate knowledge of legislation applicable to sale of goods and services.

Students who complete this qualifi cation can consider further study with us in either a Certifi cate in Business, NZ Diploma in Business or a Bachelor’s Degree in Business.
