Foundations of Nursing

This course introduces students to key conceptual areas that underpin nursing practise, encompassing human behaviour and human developmental theory throughout the lifespan within the socio-cultural, ethical and legal context of health care. Included in this course is the initial teaching of foundation nursing skills, in order to provide the opportunity for ongoing practice and development of confidence and competence.

Foundations for Professional Development

This course assists the student to develop professional attitudes with the intellectual and technical knowledge and skills required for academic study and future professional development.

Nursing Context

In this course students learn about the local, national and international perspectives which influence both the context in which nursing takes place and health outcomes at personal, community or population levels, as a basis for future nursing practise. Included in this course is the initial teaching of foundation nursing skills, in order to provide the opportunity for ongoing practice and development of confidence and competence.

Bioscience for Nurses

This course will lay the foundations of scientific knowledge required for future nursing practise including the basic concepts and principles that determine the normal functioning of the human body.

Introduction to Nursing in an In-patient Setting

This course will introduce students to the principles of nursing practise in an in-patient setting. Students will develop foundation nursing skills and knowledge specific to this context.

Introduction to Nursing in a Community Setting

This course will introduce students to the philosophy, principles and practice of Primary Health Care, the concepts of community, community assessment and nursing practise within a community environment.

Introduction to Pharmacology

This course is an introduction to pharmacological concepts and related nursing practise.

Human Anatomy and Physiology

This course introduces the student to the normal structure and function of the human body and physiological changes that occur throughout the lifespan.

Nursing with an In-patient Focus

This course integrates clinical and theoretical components designed to provide the student with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them to extend their practice within the in-patient setting.

Professional Practice

This course will develop the student’s knowledge and understanding of the role of the professional nurse through the introduction of the principles of research, evidence-based practise and health-related informatics. Contemporary nursing practise issues will be explored within legal and ethical frameworks.

Nursing with a Mental Health Focus

This course is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them to practise at a beginning level within the area of mental health.

Pacific Health and Wellness

The purpose of the course is to enable students to understand the many factors that impact on Pacific health and disability and to know how nursing practice models of care can strengthen the quality of life for Pacific people. Students will critically analyse influences and research findings into Pacific health and wellness.

Nursing with a Community Focus

This course is designed to equip the student with knowledge and skills and to promote attitudes to enable them to practise at a beginning level within the area of nursing in the community.

Hauora Māori

This course builds on existing knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi) and colonisation in relation to the status of Māori health. Following critical analysis of historical, social, economic and political processes in Aotearoa/New Zealand, students will examine the implications for nurses, nursing and health service delivery to Māori.

Focused Experience and Transition

This course integrates previous learning and extends the student’s experience in a focused area of clinical practice (in-patient, community, mental health or an individualised experience combining several related areas) and prepares them to make an effective transition from student to the role of registered nurse.
