The Certificate for Health Support Assistants (Level 4) is for people currently employed who have not had the opportunity to gain a formal qualification, or for those seeking employment in a health support role. Successful graduates will be able to be a generic Health Worker who can make a valuable contribution to a healthcare team.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

  • Be 17 years of age or older, all applicants will be interview
  • Three years secondary schooling and one year post-school experience
  • Make confidential disclosure of criminal convictions*
  • Have English language competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English. Any applicant whose first language is not English must provide evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 6.0 (with a minimum grade 6 in both listening and speaking) or equivalent e.g. ELP test with a minimum grade 6 in both listening and speaking

Applicants must be able to demonstrate the following attributes:

  • Strong motivation to work in healthcare
  • Commitment to study
  • Demonstrate any work/life experience skills
  • Show maturity and communication skills

All applicants will provide two character references from people of standing in their community.

* Note: A criminal record will not automatically exclude an applicant from entry to the programme, however crimes against another person will be taken very seriously. Factors taken into account will include: seriousness of the offence, the age at which it was committed, the length of time since it was committed, letters of support from community agencies/organisations. Where applicants declare a criminal conviction the final decision regarding entry to the programme will be made by the Dean of Faculty. Applicants have the right to appeal this decision to the Dean of Faculty. Disclosure of criminal convictions will be made to work placements if police screening is required by the agency’s policy.

Programme Summary

The Certificate for Health Support Assistants (Level 4) has four compulsory courses:

  • You and the New Zealand Healthcare System
  • Relationships within the Healthcare System
  • Supporting a Safe Environment
  • Support Activities in the Healthcare System

Part of the programme will involve experience in a clinical environment within the public or private sector.
