The National Certificate in Parks & Reserves is designed to prepare those students who intend to work in the diverse range of activities carried out by Park Rangers, including Regional Park and conservation work.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must meet the following entry requirements :

  • Have English language competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English. Any applicants whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 5.5 (with no score below 5.0) or equivalent 
  • Be physically capable of completing the practical aspects of the programme. Individuals must be independently mobile and not require assistance from another person or device, and be capable of transporting loads,  e.g. a back pack.
  • Show a commitment to work and communicate with others constructively and collaboratively in a team environment. 
  • Have no criminal convictions. Police check required as part of enrolment.  Applicants should have no previous convictions as this will preclude them in gaining employment in this industry sector

International students will be accepted on to this programme, providing at the time of application they are also accepted onto the National Certificate in Conservation Level 4, and the proposed level 5 Diploma conservation programme to be developed by MIT, and have a police check. 

Selection Requirements 
Applicants will be selected in order of successful application and interview.  Where the programme is over subscribed, selection preference will be applied by consideration of other qualifications, industrial experience, and the demonstration of enthusiasm and a commitment and understanding of a career as a Park Ranger.

Processes 
All applicants will be interviewed. The interview will provide an opportunity to discuss: 

  1. any learning support that may be required and to ensure that the applicant has chosen a suitable programme
  2. ability to participate in early morning and weekend activities with advance notice

Programme Summary

The courses are designed to prepare students for employment in regional parks, or up skill those already employed in the Regional Park and conservation sector.

The programme consists of the following courses:

  • First Aid
  • Hazard Management
  • Chainsaw operation
  • Ecology & Management of Plants in Park Areas
  • Use and maintain small machinery
  • Basic Animal Knowledge
  • History and management of Parks
  • Communications.
