This programme comprehensively covers the core skills required to become proficient in jewellery making.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

  • Present a portfolio of reproductions of 12 creative works completed within the last 18 months. These should be A4 colour printouts. The portfolio should be included with your MIT programme application form. and
  • Have English language competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English, for example have achieved NCEA Level 2 English with 4 credits in reading and 4 credits in writing or equivalent. Any applicant whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 5.5 (with no score below 5.0) or equivalent.

  • On enrolment into the programme students will be required to undertake an IT diagnostic test to establish their level of computer literacy. Where required, students will be directed to MIT FreeB computing courses to gain the computer literacy skills necessary to successful completion of the programme.

Programme Summary

Students will undertake projects to develop professional skills in the following areas:

  • Metal forming techniques
  • Joining techniques
  • Surface treatments
  • Core construction methods of jewellery forms; ring, brooch, pendant, earrings and bracelet
  • Lost wax casting
  • Enamelling
  • Drawing as a tool for planning, representation and as a design starting point

These skills and processes will be learned in the context of producing a wide range items of jewellery items.
