The National Certificate in Construction (Leading Hand) is aimed at people currently employed in the construction industry as a leading hand or for people wishing to move into that role, who need the formal skills and knowledge required to move into construction management. The programme covers topics such as implementing site safety plans, communication, using leadership and conflict resolution skills on a construction site and technical skills such as drawings and specifications, preparing order lists and weatherproofing. This qualification will assist students with their application for a Site 1 Building Practitioner’s Licence. Students can gain both theoretical and practical units which combined with on-site skills and knowledge, lead to the completion of a National Certificate in Construction (Leading Hand) Level 4.

Entry Requirements
Applicants must meet the following entry requirements:
- Have the National Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4) or
- Have a Trade Certificate in building or the construction trade or
- Have completed an approved apprenticeship (in the construction industry) or
- Have demonstrated equivalent skills as determined by MIT
- Have English language competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English
Any applicant whose first language is not English may be asked to provide evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 5.5 (with no score below 5.0) or equivalent.
Applicants will be accepted in order of application.

$1,800 (approx) Students may be required to provide specified tools at their own cost.

On successful completion of this programme students may proceed to a National Certificate in Construction (Supervisors) Level 5.

The National Certificate in Construction (Leading Hand) will assist students in supervising and managing staff engaged in construction activity on a building site. It also may form the qualification required to cover supervision and the integration of restricted work in Site 1 of the Building Practitioner’s Licence.
