A bird’s-eye view of business
This six month qualification, which can be taken either full- or part-time, will ground you in the basics of business and give you valuable skills which will carry over into ongoing studies in your chosen discipline area. The programme provides an insight into the workings of contemporary organisations and the specialist functions required to make them work effectively. It involves practical, group-based activities that will develop your communication, business and IT and interpersonal skills.

This Certificate is well suited to school leavers, mature learners returning to study or those seeking a career change and looking to update their skills.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

  • At least 40 NCEA credits at Level 2, including subjects that demonstrate competency in English, and Mathematics at NCEA Level 1 or above or equivalent
    Or
  • Graduates of appropriate qualifications of at least 60 credits at Level 2 and above
    Or
  • Demonstrate that they can work/study at a level appropriate to the programme. This will be demonstrated through an interview
    And
  • Applicants must have English language competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English. Any applicants who first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 6 (with no score below 5.5) or equivalent.

You must successfully complete 4 courses to graduate.

Course selection includes:

  • The Integrated Project

    Course Code – 183.408

    Students will work in multi-disciplinary teams on organisational/business projects, integrating and applying the knowledge and skills developed in their other courses.

  • The Organisational Environment

    Course Code – 183.406

    Develop an understanding of, and learn the fundamental skills in computing, communication and business, as used in contemporary organisations.

  • The Personal Environment

    Course Code – 183.407

    The course will be based on students’ participation in project teams and will develop the personal, interpersonal and team knowledge and skills required to work effectively in organisations.

Plus one of the following optional courses:

  • Specialist Functions within an Organisation: Computing and Information Technology

    Course Code – 567.405

    Develop an understanding of, and learn the skills required in computing and information technology used in organisations, including hardware components, programming, website design and the use of graphics software.

  • Specialist Functions within an Organisation: Business

    Course Code – 181.421

    Develop an understanding of, and learn the skills required in, business, including accounting statements and functions, the role of accounting in internal and external reporting, and the role of management within contemporary organisations.

  • Specialist Functions within an Organisation: Communication

    Course Code – 184.402

    Develop an understanding of, and learn the skills required, in organisational communication, including business and media writing, public relations and event management.
