The Certificate in Introduction to Trades (Level 2) is an ideal taster programme for those students who have an interest in trades such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing or vehicle technology but have not identified a trade career path, or do not yet meet the requirements for higher level programmes. The programme specifically prepares students for entry into certificate-level trades programmes.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

  • English language competence to undertake this programme, which is taught and assessed in English. Applicants whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 5.5 (with no band less than 5.0), or equivalent and
  • Applicants must be physically capable of completing the practical aspects of the programme and

Applicants must be able to demonstrate the following attributes:

  • a strong motivation to work in the trades
  • the ability to work in a team
  • the ability to communicate in groups and one on one
  • a mature approach to study
  • a mature attitude to health and safety in the workplace.

Programme Summary

Introduction to Trades students will study four compulsory courses, one in each of the trades areas.

Courses are:

  • Carpentry
  • Electrical
  • Plumbing
  • Vehicle Technology

Courses are structured to develop learning styles and literacy and numeracy skills alongside these core subjects. Students will attend field trips to trade sites to see how the skills they are learning are implemented in the workplace.
