The National Certificate in Security is a part-time work based training programme. It has been designed for people who are already employed and those who are actively seeking employment within the security industry. The delivery of the programme is flexible towards the hours security staff operate and considers both the current and future needs of the New Zealand security industry.

Entry Requirements
Applicants must meet all of the following entry requirements:
- Be at least 18 years of age or turn 18 years of age before completion of the programme (to enable students to seek the Security Guard Certificate of Approval or Security Guard Licence)
and - Complete the form for Consent for Disclosure of Information for the NZ Police. (Be able to hold a Security Guard Certificate of Approval or Security Guard Licence following a favourable vetting including a comprehensive background check and criminal activity report by NZ Police and Department of courts for the past 5 years)
and - Be employed within the security industry or be actively looking for employment
and - Have English competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English. An applicant whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of an overall IELTS Academic band score of 5.5 (with no score below 5.0) or equivalent.
and - For students selecting the Mobile Patrol Strand ability to gain a full drivers licence
Selection Requirements: All applicants who fulfil the entry requirements will be accepted onto the programme until the number of places available on the programme has been filled. Other applicants will be waitlisted in the order their applications were received and may gain entry onto the programme as a place becomes available.
Programme Summary
Students will receive tuition at classes and on-site workshops, and will also have work-based training opportunities to gain both theoretical and practical skills and knowledge. Evening classes will be offered at MIT’s Otara Campus or other predetermined venues.
