Entry Requirements
Applicants must meet the following attributes:
- Recommendations from the employers
- Life experiences
- Motivation to work in community mental health
- Maturity
- Experience in working with other cultural backgrounds
- Safety considerations for self and others
- Ability to undertake blended/online study at Level 4 T
The above attributes will be assessed by an interview process. The interview panel may consist of:
- A service user/tangata whai ora Tangata whenua and/or Pacific island representative
- Mental Health industry representative
- MIT lecturer
And
- Sign a form for Consent for Disclosure of Information for the NZ Police.
AND - Complete and sign a personal safety disclosure form
AND - Provide a referral from an employer in the industry (a minimum of 10 hours per week)
OR - If not working in the industry, supply two character references of the potential to work safely in the area of community mental health signed by a Justice of the Peace or Kaumatua.
AND - Have English language competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English. Any applicants whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 5.5 (with no score below 5.5) or equivalent.
Entry Requirements for Offsite Delivery (industry based training)
All of the above criteria AND applicants must be employed (fulltime/part time) by the service where training is being delivered.

Cost
$4,500 (approx)
The Ministry of Health has student grants available – up to $2,000 per student. Please contact the School of Social Services for further information.

Programme Summary
The National Certificate in Mental Health and Addiction Support (Level 4) consists of five courses:
- Ethical Practice and Legislation
- Human Growth and Development
- Support Work Planning
- Cultural Awareness,family/whanau
- Addictions and co-exisiting issues
Workplace Component
The programme will have a work-based component of 335 hours out of a total of 1200 hours of student learning.
Personal/Professional Development
A tutorial system, practicum supervision and professional supervision will ensure personal/professional development takes place for each course participant.
Assessment
Programme participants must demonstrate throughout the programme that they have achieved competency to the NZQA unit standard. Assessment methods will include a variety of written and practical oral presentations within the classroom and mental health settings. A minimum of 80% attendance at all courses is required.
