If you are seeking a rewarding career with plenty of opportunities to grow and develop your people skills, you’ll find tourism a perfect fit. The National Certificate in Tourism will teach you communication and customer service skills and provide you with an understanding of
New Zealand’s tourism industry, opening doors to front-line positions with a wealth of opportunity for further training and promotion.
You can complete this qualification in one semester of full-time study. It is complete in itself, but also provides a pathway to further study through stair-casing opportunities.
Your career in tourism might begin with a role in airport or hotel operations or tourism attractions and other services in the tourism industry.

Graduates of the National Certificate in Tourism are encouraged to take on the MIT Certificate in Travel as the next step in qualifying for a wider range of front-line positions in the travel and tourism industry.

Entry Requirements
Applicants must meet one of the following entry requirements:
- A minimum of 48 NCEA credits at level 1 or higher including a minimum of 12 credits that demonstrate fluency in written English at Level 1 or above PLUS a minimum of 10 credits in Service Sector Core Skills at Level 2 or above. The remainder of credits (26) from any domain, must be at level 2 or higher.
OR - Successfully completed the National Certificate in Tourism Introductory Skills or equivalent
OR - An Interview
All applicants must be able to demonstrate the attributes listed below. These attributes will be assessed through an interview process. -
- A customer service orientation
- An enthusiasm and motivation to pursue a career in the tourism and/or travel industries.
- Readiness and ability to study at Level 3
- Technology literacy
- Numeracy
- Literacy in reading and writing
- Confidence and clarity of expression when communicating verbally
- Listening skills
All applicants will be advised by letter of the interview requirements prior to the interview.
AND
- Have English language competency to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English. Any applicants whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 5.5 (with no individual score below 5.5) or equivalent.
Applicants who do not meet the entry criteria will be referred to other appropriate programmes within the Institute.
