Modern Apprenticeships in Automotive

Careers for Modern Apprentices in Automotive

  • Automotive Engineer: checks and repairs cars, vans, trucks and other vehicles and their parts.
  • Automotive Electrician: installs, maintains and repairs electrical wiring, and electrical and electronic systems in vehicles.
  • Panelbeater: repairs or replaces body parts of vehicles that have rusted or been damaged.
  • Automotive refinishing: repaints and refinishes vehicles, usually after the vehicles have had panel beating repairs.
  • Heavy automotive engineers: service and repair heavy vehicles such as trucks, buses, bulldozers and tractors.

Qualifications for Modern Apprenticeships in Automotive

  • National Certificate in Automotive Engineering - Level 4
  • National Certificate in Automotive Electrical Engineering - Level 4
  • National Certificate in Panelbeating - Level 4
  • National Certificate in Automotive Refinishing - Level 4
  • National Certificate in Automotive Heavy Engineering Road Transport

The usual length of time required for an apprentice to gain the above National Certificate is generally 3 to 4 years.

Entry criteria for Modern Apprenticeships in Automotive

To become a Modern Apprentice in the Automotive industry, you should have preferably completed three years secondary education; however there are exceptions to this requirement. Apprentices in automotive must be capable of studying at level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework.

Industry Training Agreement

Modern Apprentices in Automotive will be signed into an industry training agreement with the Motor Industry Training Organisation (MITO), which manages automotive apprenticeships and provides funding to the apprentice to help meet training costs.
