Modern Apprenticeships in Engineering
Modern Apprenticeships in Engineering at Manukau Institute of Technology is divided into two major branches:
- Fabrication Engineering: Including Fabrication (Heavy and Light), Refrigeration and Air-conditioning, Heating and Ventilation and Welding.
- Mechanical Engineering: Including strands in Fitting and Machining, General Engineering, Machining, Maintenance Engineering and Toolmaking.
Careers for Modern Apprentices in Engineering
- Fabrication Engineer (Heavy): uses thick metal pipes and shaped pieces to make and repair such things as the framework of buildings, boilers, storage tanks and cranes.
- Fabrication Engineer (Light): makes installs and repairs sheet-metal products such as vents, machine guards, vats and aircraft bodywork.
- Refrigeration/Air Conditioning Design Engineer: designs refrigeration systems for making frozen foods and air-conditioning systems for large office buildings.
- Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning Engineer: designs and supervise the building, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems and equipment.
- Fabrication Engineer (Welding): joins and repairs the metal parts for machinery and equipment such as motor bodies, trailer units, containers, trucks, frames and bridges.

Mechanical Engineering with strands in Fitting and Machining, General Engineering, Machining, Maintenance Engineering, and Toolmaking:
- Fitting and Machining strand - machine building and related occupations, where both precision fitting and machining skills are required.
- General Engineering strand - general engineering, where the work may involve fitting, machining, welding, maintenance, repair, hydraulics, pneumatics, marine or rail engineering, fabrication, or gunsmithing.
- Machining strand - precision machining of components. CNC mills and lathes producing engineering components to high degrees of tolerance and finish.
- Maintenance Engineering strand - engineering maintenance work where the emphasis is on maintaining reliable production.
- Toolmaking strand - makes tools, press tooling, moulds, dies, gauges, jigs, and fixtures for industrial processes.
