What is a Modern Apprenticeship?
Modern Apprenticeships work place learning for today
A Modern Apprenticeship builds on the best of apprenticeship traditions, but has some great new features. Like traditional apprenticeships, you will be signed into an industry training agreement with the relevant Industry Training Organisation, and work and earn while you learn on the job. There will generally also be an off the job component to your training which may take place at a tertiary provider such as a polytechnic (training may occur by block course, day release or night course) or might be undertake via correspondence.
The big difference with a Modern Apprenticeship is that you will be assigned your own personal mentor (free of charge), a Modern Apprenticeship co-ordinator whose job it will be to help you to succeed. Your co-ordinator will ensure you complete your training with an employer who offers top quality employment-based training.
Your own personalised training plan
Your Modern Apprenticeships co-ordinator will work with you and your employer to develop a personal training plan tailored to your needs. The plan will set out exactly what you need to learn to achieve your qualification and how you're going to get there.
Modern Apprenticeships - a focus on your success
Your Modern Apprenticeships co-ordinator will regularly review your progress against your personal training plan to make sure you're on target to successfully complete your apprenticeship.
And just like any coach or mentor, they will be available to deal with any questions or hassles you may have during your apprenticeship.
A nationally-recognised qualification
Modern Apprenticeship training leads to National Certificates at levels 3 and 4 of the National Qualifications Framework. This means your Modern Apprenticeship training will be recognised by employers throughout New Zealand.
NB: Modern Apprenticeships does not replace traditional apprenticeships but rather builds the services of a co-ordinator onto them for people who meet the entry criteria.
