Faculty of Nursing and Health Studies

If you enjoy caring for people from a diverse range of backgrounds, religions and cultures and have been thinking about a career in healthcare, social services, mental health or addiction services now is the time to make it a reality. The demand for these services is growing rapidly, and we can help you get the skills and qualifications you need to be a health professional.

At the Faculty of Nursing and Health Studies, you can study in the following areas:

We believe in our students and their potential to make a valuable contribution to healthcare at all levels. We want you to succeed and pride ourselves on the positive learning environment and support we offer you.

This environment and high level of support is made possible by our highly respected staff who are continually building on their excellent reputation for teaching and clinical expertise by being actively engaged in research and being right on the pulse of developments in healthcare. This also helps to cultivate an atmosphere where our students develop social and cultural awareness and are prepared for the most current industry requirements.

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve the quality of and access to education we also engage in a number of community and other initiatives. For example, in June 2011, MIT entered into a partnership with Counties Manukau Health, alongside other tertiary providers, through the establishment of Ko Awatea - a centre for education and innovation at Middlemore Hospital. We have also collaborated with Counties Manukau Health on other programmes such as 'earn as you learn' and the establishment of Dedicated Education Units (DEUs).

This level of ongoing adaptation and improvement combined with our close working relationships with health care providers is reflected in the extremely high completion rates our students achieve. Already well above 80% in 2008, we have worked over the last 5 years to raise those levels even higher.

Level 4, Māori, Pacific, Under 25 and all other overall rates for programmes such as the Certificate for Health Support Assistants and the Bachelor of Nursing all increased to the mid-high 90 percentile.

Our students have valuable access to a wide range of quality clinical placements and our graduates go on to achieve a high rate of employment, both locally and internationally in many sectors including hospitals, the armed forces, corporations, community and government organisations.

If you want a rewarding career where you can make a difference to individuals, communities and the nation's health and wellbeing, you've come to the right place.

Join us now for a future full of possibilities.
