Located in the heart of the largest Pacific population in New Zealand, Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) is committed to the current and future success of Pasifika students and to playing a significant role in the development and advancement of our Pasifika communities.
This commitment is encapsulated in the 2008 - 2013 MIT Strategic Plan. The Institute's commitments and accountabilities have been developed within the Pasifika Development Plan for implementation and monitoring and are closely aligned to the key strategic priorities for MIT.
The Pasifika Development Plan encompasses the following goals and objectives;
- to contribute to successful Pasifika student achievement that reflects demographic responsibility.
- to develop, enhance and maintain relationships with Pasifika communities in the Counties Manukau region.
- to provide a framework for Pasifika leadership at all levels.
- the establishment of a Pasifika Centre on campus.
- to develop, enhance and maintain collaborative "partnerships" with tertiary education institutions in the Pacific region.
- support for Pasifika music, business and culture

Pasifika Community Centre
As part of MIT's commitment to strengthening Pasifika communities, we are extremely excited to announce the opening of our new Pasifika Community Centre (MIT Ōtara, North Campus) in June 2016. The occasion will be celebrated with a spiritual dawn blessing, followed by a special opening ceremony which will be attended by dignitaries, local Pasifika and community leaders, senior MIT staff members, and students.
This purpose-built building houses impressive features including large and small meeting rooms, a gathering hall, large catering kitchen and break-out rooms for staff and students, as well as craft rooms. There is also a beautiful sanctuary room for students who wish to offer prayers and meditation.
The completion of the Pasifika Community Centre is a remarkable and historic achievement with great significance for the local community, and will benefit current and future generations. This has been a monumental project undertaken by dedicated staff (both past and present) who persevered in seeing this building completed. Our Pasifika community and all MIT staff will be able to connect to a central structure that is dedicated towards expressing our cultural identity as well as a beautiful meeting house for our community (including churches, organisations and school groups).
If you are interested in using any of the rooms in the Pasifika Community Centre for your next business meeting, church gathering, classes or even workshops, please feel free to inquire for further information by emailing the Pasifika Development Office.
