MIT keeping the Faith

The Warriors trained at Mt Smart on Wednesday before flying out to Australia.

Students at MIT’s School of Sport recently got an up-close look at how a professional sports team operates with a field trip to Mt Smart Stadium.

The institute has a long standing relationship with the Warriors and on hand to show the latest cohort around was former MIT student and the club’s current ISP (Intrust Super Premiership) coach, Jerome Ropati.

The students watched the NRL side go through its paces immediately before flying out for their latest game in Australia.

The tour of the facilities took in the gymnasium and video room where students were shown how analysis of teams and individual players is uses to enhance the side’s fortunes on the field.

Though the highlight of the trip was student Dan Maireroa being put through his paces by Warriors legend and now high performance assistant, Ruben Wiki. Fortunately Dan is an expert martial artist so he could handle the intensive two minute workout that the players know, not so affectionately, as Wiki Love.

The School of Sport likes to regularly expose students to professional sporting environments so they have a good idea of the choices available to them and the expectations of industry.

“They try to identify the culture and pedagogy of the team and management. We question what value the New Zealand Warriors contribute to our community before the visit and answer what we observe after the visit,” says MIT School of Sport, practice leader Michelle Parsons.
