Shane Tu’ihalangingie explains his work, Untitled

“The inspiration was from my dad telling the story of how they migrated here. The stories stuck with me and I looked at the now, and how my family came from another country (Tonga) and how we are living a new form of migration in the new era,” is the way Shane Tu’ihalangingie explains his work, Untitled.

In June the image taken at his family home in Māngere – where they have lived for over thirty years – won the Barfoot and Thompson prize at the Glaister Ennor Graduate Art Awards.

Untitled also received the Glaister Ennor Staff Choice Award while selling out its run of five prints.

The 28-year-old recently graduated from MIT with a Bachelor of Creative Arts and is now training to be a teacher.

Entrants for the awards are selected from recent graduates of art schools across Auckland.
