Get ahead with a salon-specific introduction to the creative hairdressing industry. 

Find out about salon culture and the different roles within it, as well as how to follow the direction of stylists and supervisors. Learn a range of client skills including how to look after and communicate with clients and get them ready for stylists. Develop your own personal style and learn how to present yourself professionally. Provide support by keeping the salon tidy and well maintained. 

On graduating, you'll be able to apply for the New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support) (Level 3).

Entry-level position as a Salon Assistant or could lead into an apprenticeship

Programme structure

Students must successfully complete the following courses:

Inside the industry

  • Produce a personal career plan and describe milestone stages and qualifications
  • Explain the client journey through the salon for a variety of services
  • Use appropriate terminology and language in the salon

Being a professional

  • Style own hair to create a professional appearance
  • Present a professional image for the hairdressing industry
  • Communicate appropriately with clients and other team members
  • Produce a CV to apply for a junior position within a salon
  • Produce a personal budget plan

Working in the industry

  • Meet, greet and care for a client during salon services
  • Support and assist a stylist in preparing and providing services in a salon
  • Maintain the salon environment
