Academic requirements
Applicants must have:
Completed a Certificate in Foundation Skills (Level 2) or equivalent.
For applicants 20 years of age and over there are no minimum academic requirements.
Additional Academic Requirements
For the Pre diploma Engineering contextualisation of this programme applicants must also have:
NCEA Level 1, 10 credits in each of Numeracy and Literacy standards or equivalent
General Requirements
For some contextualisations, applicants must be physically capable of completing the practical aspects of the programme in a setting appropriate to the context. For example in a trade workshop, worksite, workplace environment, nursing and/or health related setting.
If an applicant wishes to progress to a nursing or health programme, police vetting will be required at that time.
For the Police Studies contextualisation this programme does not automatically guarantee acceptance into the NZ Police.
English Language Entry Requirements
Applicants must have sufficient competence in the English language to undertake this programme, which is taught and assessed in English.
Any applicant whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of their English language competency.

Note: If an applicant was not born or schooled in New Zealand and wishes to progress to a nursing or health programme, an IELTS (Academic) or ELP test plus speaking assessment is required at that time, with a minimum score of 6.5 in each band.
Applicants who have not attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the required minimum entry requirements may be eligible to be enrolled in exceptional circumstances. Such decisions will be made by the appropriate Dean and will be determined on a case by case basis.
Entry Process
An orientation/counselling session will be available for all applicants to:
- ensure applicants are well informed about the programme’s demands and requirements.
- counsel the applicant on the appropriate choice of programme.
- determine whether the programme is appropriate for the applicant’s needs and/or proposed career path.
- determine whether any specific support is required.
Orientation/counselling sessions will be contextualisation specific. The guidance and support of Whanau, family members or support people is encouraged at this session.
The suitability of the programme to meet the applicant’s needs may be established through an initial literacy and numeracy assessment.
For the Police Studies contextualisation applicants will be made aware of the NZ Police entry requirements that all applicants:
- Be at least 17 years old (must be 18 before you can start at police college).
- Hold a full NZ driver licence.
- Be a New Zealand or Australian Citizen or Resident.
- Be available to attend constabulary recruitment assessments in person.
- Be physically fit and in excellent health.
- Notify constabulary recruitment staff of any previous criminal or traffic convictions (including warnings, court appearances, and diversions).
- Provide police clearance for any country (other than NZ) that you have worked or resided in for longer than three months.
- Be able to communicate effectively in English (through reading, active listening, writing, and speaking).
- Have good eyesight. This is defined as a minimum visual standard of 6/12 unaided in each eye, correctable to 6/6 with contact lenses or glasses.
