Applications

How do I apply to study at Manukau Institute of Technology?

You can apply yourself or by using an agent. Your application form can be posted, you can apply online.  If you are in Auckland, New Zealand you can come to the Information Centre, Gate 1, Newbury Street, Otara, Auckland Monday to Friday 11.00am to 2.00pm.

What do I need to apply?

To apply, complete the application form. You must supply

  • A copy of your senior high school results
  • A copy of your valid passport or birth certificate
  • Documentation relating to other relevant qualifications, or work experience and career wishes
  • A copy of your latest IELTS result (no more than two years old), if applicable

Your information will be assessed and if your application is successful you will be issued an Offer of Place. This will set out your fees for your programme of study, a quote for compulsory insurance, other related costs and provide details of how to pay this money.

Can I still apply if I do not have my IELTS results?

Yes, however you would be issued with a conditional Offer of Place until you have supplied your IELTS results. In some cases IELTS may not be required.

Do I need to submit an IELTS result with my application?

From some countries IELTS is not required.  If you are not sure, please submit your application with the documents you have available.  If IELTS is required you will be notified.

How long do applications take to be processed?

Most applications will take 10 working days to be processed.  However if a student is applying for cross-credits they must allow four-six weeks for processing.

Can I fax or email my application?

Yes, however you will need to provide original copies of documentation on arrival in New Zealand.

Should I send original documents to Manukau Institute of Technology?

Original documents should not be sent to Manukau Institute of Technology as they will not be returned.  All documents should be certified photocopies of the original.  If you apply to study with a Manukau Institute of Technology approved Education Consultant, they are authorised to verify your documents.  Click here for a list of agents.

What is the application deadline?

Students are able to apply for programmes right up until the programme closes or the start of the semester.  However, if you live outside New Zealand, you must allow 10 working days for applications to be processed and a further 10 weeks to apply for your student visa.  Please note some programmes have limited entry so early applications may be required to secure your place.

English

What is an IELTS and how do I take the exam?

IELTS examinations test the English proficiency of students in the area of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.  They offer tests in both general and academic English.  Manukau Institute of Technology only accepts the academic English test results.  Please visit www.ielts.org to find a centre close to you.  If you are currently in New Zealand, Manukau Institute of Technology runs a testing station.  To book a test date please contact the School of English, Tel: 09 968-8617 or go to the School of English on the Manukau Institute of Technology website.

Does Manukau Institute of Technology have an internal English Language Test?

Yes, Manukau Institute of Technology offers English Language Proficiency test (ELP) which can only be taken on campus.  This is an internal test and can only be used when applying to study at Manukau Institute of Technology.

Can I study English at Manukau Institute of Technology?

Is there an application fee?

No, there is no application fee.

Fees and Expenses

How do I pay tuition fees?

You will either need to pay by bank transfer (details are listed in your acceptance documents) or come into Academic Registry and then pay the cashier. Please make sure you quote your ID number and name when making any payments.  Places are not guaranteed unless full payment has been received as stated on the Offer of Place. You will need to pay for your programme of study before your programme commences.

How much does it cost to live in New Zealand?

We recommend students budget $250 to $300NZD per week for living costs.  This will depend on your choice of accommodation.  

Does Manukau Institute of Technology offer financial support to students?

No, international students are not eligible for student loans and allowances.  Financial support through a scholarship is only offered through: New Zealand Development Scholarships (NZDS) www.nzaid.govt.nz 

What happens if I decide to withdraw from all or part of my programme?

You must inform your Programme Leader and complete a Withdrawal or Transfer Application form.  You will be required to meet with Student Life to discuss your decision prior to withdrawal.  You must continue to attend classes until a decision has been reached.

What is Manukau Institute of Technology's refund policy?

If you think you are entitled to get a refund, you must complete an International Withdrawal or Transfer Application form and discuss your requirements with Academic Registry. For a full copy of the policy go to Cancellations, Withdrawals and Transfers of International Students Policy (AM5).

Can I use my outstanding English tuition fees towards another programme?

If you are accepted onto a mainstream Manukau Institute of Technology programme, you can credit any outstanding ESOL fees towards the cost. There is no charge for this service.

General

When does the semester begin?

Manukau Institute of Technology has two intakes (semesters) per year, February and July.  

Can I study part time?

No.  All international students have to study full time to meet the requirement of their student permit with Immigration New Zealand, INZ.  However a student on a work permit may study part time, as long as they apply for a variation of conditions on their work permit with INZ. Can I study for just one or two semesters?

Yes if this is the length of the programme.

Visas and Insurance

How do I get my Student Visa?

Please check Immigration New Zealand website as requirements for different countries vary.  www.immigration.govt.nz

Do I need insurance?

All international students must have an appropriate and comprehensive medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand.  Manukau Institute of Technology can arrange insurance coverage for you.  If you choose to purchase alternative insurance you must provide a copy of the policy and be given approval by Academic Registry, International Administration.  The policy will be checked by Academic Registry, International Administration to make sure minimum requirements have been met.

Can I work part time while studying at Manukau Institute of Technology?

Yes, students attending a diploma or degree programme or a programme that qualifies for Skilled Migrant Category for Immigration New Zealand's Residence Policy can work up to 20 hours per week and can work full time during summer vacation, November to February.  Please note students will not be able to fund themselves working part time. You cannot work if you are studying English unless you have obtained and overall band score of 5.0 IELTS (general).  You cannot work while studying Foundation programmes.

Accommodation and Arrival in New Zealand

What about homestay?

Our Student Life Team can arrange a homestay for you if you request this or tick 'yes' for homestay on the application form. The cost is $195NZD per week for students studying at North and South Campus or $205NZD per week for those studying at Maritime School.  Students must stay a minimum of eight weeks in a homestay before choosing other accommodation.

How do I pay the homestay?

Homestay payments can be paid directly to Manukau Institute of Technology, eight weeks in advance.

Do you have a hostel at Manukau Institute of Technology?

Yes it is call Manukau Institute of Technology, Student Village. It costs NZ$120 per week, excluding meals.  For further information on the Student Village click here.

What happens when I arrive at Auckland International Airport? Will someone meet me?

If you are staying at Manukau Institute of Technology Student Village or homestay you will be met by MIT staff at Auckland International Airport.  The staff will be holding a sign with Manukau Institute of Technology and your name.  If you have arranged your own accommodation most students choose not to use this service as a fee does apply.

Can I drive in New Zealand?

If you have an up-to-date drivers licence, you can drive for up to 12 months on your foreign licence. Then you must sit for a New Zealand licence, www.ltsa.govt.nz

Where do I buy my books?

Textbooks are available through Bennetts Bookshop on North Campus.  

How do I get my timetable?

You will be given your timetable during orientation.

How and when do I get an ID card?

Once you have paid your fees, you have attended orientation and your registration and enrolment has been processed, please come to Academic Registry to have an ID card issued. We will take your photo and process your card. You need an ID card to access the Library and log onto the computers at Manukau Institute of Technology.

Where do I go on my first day at Manukau Institute of Technology?

Please go to Student Life, Gate 1, L Block, Newbury Street, Otara, Auckland.  Office hours are Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4.00pm.   Who can I phone or see if I have any queries while studying?
