Youth Guarantee

16 to 19-year-olds have the chance to study for FREE at Manukau Institute of Technology.
This means saving thousands of dollars in course tuition fees.

As part of the government's Youth Guarantee scheme, Manukau Institute of Technology has FREE spaces for young people to study for a tertiary qualification. You can now get the skills and qualifications for great jobs, over a wide range of industries.

For 16–17 year olds
  • Apply for Youth Guarantee places in approved programmes at Manukau Institute of Technology.
  • Get funding for course fees
  • Apply to Study Link for a Student Allowance if eligible.
For 18–19 year olds
  • Apply for Youth Guarantee places in approved programmes at Manukau Institute of Technology.
  • Get funding for course fees
  • Apply for course-related costs and living costs only, as part of Study Link's Student Loan scheme
  • Apply for a Student Allowance from Study Link if eligible.

Please note: If you have achieved a Level 3 National or Level 3 New Zealand Certificate qualification, or have already received two years of funding under Youth Guarantee, you will no longer be eligible for Youth Guarantee funding.

Eligible programmes for 2017

What you need to know

  1. Are you a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident? 
    Potential Youth Guarantee students must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
  2. What age are you? 
    Potential Youth Guarantee students must be 16–19 years old at the start of their course/study.
  3. Are you still at school?
    Youth Guarantee students must not be enrolled in school and an approved Youth Guarantee Level 1, 2, or 3 programme at the same time.
  4. Have you already achieved a Level 3 or higher National or New Zealand Certificate qualification?
    Applicants who have already achieved a Level 3 National or Level 3 New Zealand Certificate qualification are not eligible for Youth Guarantee funding.
  5. What programme/course do you intend to enrol in? 
    Youth Guarantee students must enrol in an approved Youth Guarantee Level 1, 2, or 3 programme that has a minimum of 60 credits. This programme could be full time one semester or part time over one year. Youth Guarantee students who enrol in an approved Youth Guarantee Level 1, 2, or 3 programme that has less than 60 credits must enrol in another approved Youth Guarantee Level 1, 2, or 3 programme of at least 40 credits in order to be eligible for Youth Guarantee funding.

  6. How long will the Youth Guarantee programme/course be funded for?
    If you're enrolled in a Youth Guarantee-approved programme, there is a two (2) year limit on funding.
  7. Potential Youth Guarantee students will be required to sign a declaration form.

Free Level 1 and 2 programmes

* All Level 1 and 2 programmes excluding First Aid certificate courses will be free in 2017 for New Zealand citizens, residents entitled to reside in New Zealand indefinitely, and refugees and protected persons (under the Immigration Act 2009), of all ages that are eligible for tertiary study. Free Study for Level 3 may be available for 16 to 19 year olds (Youth Guarantee). Proof of residency status required. Entry criteria, and some costs may also apply.
