Biography

Sayan Ray is currently the Academic Leader (Curriculum and Research) of digital technologies.

He was the acting Associate Dean and acting Head of School of Digital Technologies in his previous roles. He was also the Programme Leader of new programme development and Programme Leader of Networking. He was actively involved in different international collaboration initiatives between the School (and the former Faculty of Business and IT) and other overseas institutes.

Sayan has a Ph.D degree in Computer Science from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand and Master of Technology and Bachelor of Engineering degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Calcutta and Gulbarga University, respectively, in India. He also completed the Summer Institute for Entrepreneurship (SIE) programme from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University, USA, fully funded by the New Zealand Foundation for Research, Science and Technology.

As an active and PBRF ranked researcher, Sayan regularly publishes scholarly articles in quality-assured peer-reviewed conferences and journals (IEEE, ACM, Elsevier and Springer), and serves in the technical programme committees of multiple leading conferences worldwide. He frequently gets invited to give keynote and invited talks in conferences and industry gatherings.

Sayan extensively collaborates with researchers from different universities, and is an active member of the Network and Security Research Group in the School of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences at Auckland University of Technology. He was the associate supervisor for two completed Ph.D work at Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand and is a member of the supervisory committee for another ongoing Ph.D work at the same university.

Sayan’s research publications have received multiple best paper awards in reputed conferences and journals. Sayan is the Review Editor for the Frontiers in Communications and Networks journal and was the invited Guest Editor for a special issue on “Intelligent Green Communication Networks for IoT” in the Annals of Telecommunications journal. As an active network consultant, Sayan has provided consultancy support in projects related to wireless networks (LTE and WiMAX networks; heterogeneous handover and mobility; cloud) and location-based services (WiFi and iBeacon-based indoor location tracking and navigation).

Before joining MIT, Sayan was a design engineer with Tait Communications in New Zealand where his work involved analysing the performance of LTE base stations and 3GPP Evolved Packet Core, and researching on heterogeneous mobility. Before relocating to New Zealand, he worked in the software industry and in academia in India for multiple years.

Scholarly activities

Current and past research projects (in collaboration with researchers from other institutes):

Technology-Assisted System to Support Medical Emergency Situations of Elderly People

This research work aims to design and develop a technology-assisted medical emergency system that will integrate a layer of informal caregivers (friends, family, neighbours) with the existing formal caregivers, like ambulance and paramedics, to create an end-to-end emergency response system. The informal caregivers will act as the first responders to attend the elderly patients before the arrival of the ambulance. A context-aware recommendation system will be developed to shortlist and select the most appropriate informal caregiver for a medical emergency situation based on different contextual parameters. This work will use IoT and Machine Learning algorithms.

Dynamic Spectrum Sharing and Management between heterogeneous Technologies in the Unlicensed Bands

This project work is studying the effect of dynamic spectrum sharing between technologies like LTE, WiFi, IoT, 5G-NR in the different unlicensed bands. The aim is to propose dynamic spectrum sharing and management techniques for the coexistence of the heterogeneous technologies in unlicensed bands.

IoT and Cellular Networks-based Natural Disaster Management

This project focuses on mechanisms of energy-aware network congestion-control, tracking of people and effective traffic offloading after the occurrence of natural disaster incidents. IoT and cloud-based disaster management infrastructures are explored.

QoS in Next-Generation Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) Communication in Multi-Layered and Multi-Radio Network Environments

This project is on novel context-aware and QoS-oriented V2I mobility and handover mechanisms in 5G multi-cell multi-layered heterogeneous environment consisting of LTE-A / Mobile WiMAX and WiFi networks.

Secured Routing in IoT

This project work was about the secured routing of data through IoT networks. A trust-based framework was developed that can be applied to secure IoT routing protocols.

Policy-based Pricing for Ubiquitous Services in Heterogeneous Networks

This project aimed to develop new customer-centric, policy-based pricing schemes and models for different ubiquitous services for next-generation (5G) heterogeneous networks.
