Making a Difference

Tertiary High School

In 2010 we opened Aotearoa’s first Tertiary High School, which blends NCEA secondary school studies with MIT courses in trades to support tauira who are at risk of disengaging from conventional secondary school. Our Tertiary High tauira engage with this programme, leave with success and real qualifications.

Principal Toe Pune sums it up like this:

“My work is to engage with the community, particularly Māori and Pasifika families, to ensure they take an interest in their children’s learning. A lot of my work is done outside the school, out in the community; in people’s homes, supporting teams on the side-lines, in churches.”

Serco - we offer programmes for those who are in the Serco prison teaching literacy, numeracy, leadership, trades skills and some languages.

Te Ara Oranga – this programme is aimed at providing 500 new workers into the health system – nurses, social workers, and enrolled nurses. This is an opportunity for those who want to work in health services.

Māori and Pasifika Trades Training - we encourage young Māori and Pasifika people to gain trade qualifications, New Zealand apprenticeships and employment. Scholarships are available in courses such as automotive, plumbing, construction and culinary.

MIT has been helping people into great jobs in a wide range of practical, applied learning settings for over 50 years. We continue to adapt to serve the needs of our learners and community - the heart of everything we do.
