Phil Goff visits former teacher at MIT
On Friday (15 April), MIT's Director of External Relations Stuart Middleton was paid a visit by a former pupil - Phil Goff, Labour MP and Auckland Mayoral candidate.
While a few decades have passed, Goff still remembers his days in Middleton's classroom at Papatoetoe High School: "When I was in my 7th form year, there was this young man with fiery red hair. I remember him being a remarkable teacher, with an ability to relate to and motivate his students."
"He always encouraged us to learn and he had enormous respect from his students, some of whom are now in their sixties," he says.
During his visit to MIT Manukau, Mr Goff dropped in on a Level 4 Medical Administration class in the Faculty of Business and IT, and spoke to the students and lecturer Earlene Wood.
"What I'm particularly interested in is seeing the incredible work MIT is doing in transitions, and making sure our kids are motivated and see the purpose of their learning," Goff says.
"MIT plays a critical role in the south of the city," he says. "It's important to the future of our city for young people in every part of the country to get the level of education that's going to enable them to achieve their full potential."
"It's allowing all of our young people to prepare for life and be able to earn a wage that will sustain them and their families," he says.
