Funded by BCITO and ConCOVE Tuhura, this research was undertaken to better understand and quantify the often-unseen contributions employers make to supporting apprentices, with the aim of ensuring these efforts are recognised in future policy and planning. The objective was to estimate the value of employer support—including time and direct financial contributions—across the construction sector, using a survey of 317 BCITO employers combined with publicly available data.

Findings show that employers contribute approximately $28,000 per apprentice annually (mainly derived from the cost of time). Further research is now needed to identify which aspects of pastoral care most influence apprentice retention and success.
