This week we learned the sad news of the passing of Dr. Ranginui Walker. Dr. Walker was a longstanding friend and mentor to MIT, with a relationship stretching back to the 1990s.
He served as both a Council member and as an advisor on matters Māori, and was instrumental in educating our staff about Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Most recently, Dr. Walker was the Chair of the Māori and Pasifika Student Success Taskforce for the Faculty of Business and Information Technology.
Dr. Walker’s leadership and commitment to education and history was remarkable, and MIT has truly benefitted from his counsel. We would like to acknowledge and honour the contribution he has made to the Institute and to Aotearoa.
Our thoughts are with Dr. Walker’s whānau, friends and iwi at this sad time.
E te Rangatira, haere atu rā, moe mai rā.

E te rangatira Ranginui
Haeretia te huarahi whakamutunga
Mō tātou te tangata.
Haere haere haere.
Waihotia mai ngā mahi kua mahitia e koe.
ōrite tonu ki te pokotanga o te wai.
Kei i a koe tēnā
Engari ko ngā ngaru ka rere ki wāhi kē.
Moe mai.
Ranginui the Rangatira.
Travel the final pathway
destined for mankind.
Farewell.
Leave behind the activities you have done.
Like piercing the water
where you want,
the waves that flow from it, go beyond.
Sleep the long sleep.
– Kūkupa Tirikatene, Kaiākau of MIT
