Abstract: Polytechnic research in New Zealand has been largely overlooked in the past, but a growing body of work signals that academics in a non-university degree-granting institutions are undertaking and publishing research in national and international media. This paper fills an existing gap in the literature by providing an inaugural collation of the 2003 research outputs of the majority of institutes of technology and polytechnics. Outstanding achievements by some polytechnic academics are also highlighted, showing that excellence is not confined to the universities. Other issues discussed include the need for lead time in developing institutional research cultures, the reported influence upon United Kingdom researchers of preferences of members of the RAE panels, and the Australian academic response to continued tinkering with policies for rewarding institutions with high research productivity. Adoption of a standardised reporting format is also suggested.
