Do you want a career in the New Zealand Police? Not sure if you have the essential skills to make the grade?
Get a head start on meeting the requirements you need to get accepted into the Royal New Zealand Police College. You will also develop the self-management skills you need to succeed in your training to become a police officer.
Our classrooms are supportive learning environments that will help you become more confident and independent.
In order to be accepted into the Royal New Zealand Police College you must meet their selection criteria which includes being over 18 years, being able to pass a police check, and having a full drivers licence.
You may be required to complete literacy and numeracy assessments as part of this programme.
Entry requirements
General
Open entry for domestic students
There are no academic requirements that need to be met to enter this programme.
International students: English language entry requirements
For the minimum English language requirements refer to the requirements set out in the NZQF Programme and Accreditation Rules.
International students will generally be required to provide evidence of English language proficiency, for this programme an IELTS General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5 is required. Equivalent acceptable evidence can be seen at the following NZQA link.

Courses within some of our programmes may be offered as an individual Certificate of Proficiency (COP). Programme entry requirements and course fees apply. For more information, please speak to our friendly Ask Me! team.
Further training or study
The New Zealand Certificate in Study and Employment Pathways (Level 3) Police Studies will help prepare you for application to the New Zealand Police.
If you decide to continue with further training in sport or social work, study options are:
- New Zealand Certificate in Sport and Recreation (Level 4)
- New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Social and Community Services) (Level 4) with strands in Community Healthwork and Mental Health and Addiction Support
- New Zealand Certificate in Study and Employment Pathways (Level 4) Education and Social Sciences
