If the unexpected happens or things don’t go to plan, you may be able to apply for an extension, a resubmission or further assessment, or another kind of assessment concession.

Choose the right process

Choose the assessment concession that suits your situation

If you are not sure which process to use after reading the information on this page, please speak with your lecturer or Academic Lead Student, or contact one of our student support services for advice.

The information on this page is important because it may affect your ability to successfully pass your course. If you submit an assessment late without an approved concession, your work may not be marked, you could lose marks, or you may lose your opportunity for a resubmission or further assessment.

Further information can be found in the Student Regulations.

Extensions

Short extensions of up to five (5) calendar days

You do not need to complete the application form. All you need to do is ask your lecturer.

You will need to complete the application form and follow the process below.

You can apply for an extension if you:

  • Are unable to complete an assessment by the due date and need more time.
  • Apply as soon as possible after you become aware that you may need an extension.
  • Are affected by legitimate circumstances beyond your control (e.g., illness, injury, bereavement, or other circumstance).

Applying for an extension of more than five (5) calendar days

Some programmes, courses, or assessments do not allow extensions. To check what applies to your assessment, read your course information on Canvas or speak with your lecturer.

  • Provide persuasive evidence explaining the circumstances beyond your control and why you need more time.

Reasons an extension may not be approved

  • Extensions are not permitted for your programme, course or assessment.
  • The circumstances are of your own making (e.g., time management issues).
  • The request relates to events such as birthdays, holidays, or weddings.
  • Granting the extension would be unfair to other students.
  • Granting the extension would compromise assessment integrity or objectives.
  • Your evidence is missing or not persuasive, or the decision maker does not consider the reason valid.
  • Your application is not made in time.

If your extension is approved

  • Submit your assessment by the new due date. Further extensions are unlikely to be granted.

You can apply for a resubmission or further assessment if you:

  • Failed an assessment.
  • Apply for the concession within five (5) working days of receiving the marked assessment.

Applying for a resubmission or further assessment

Some programmes, courses, or assessments do not allow resubmission or further assessment. In other cases, these opportunities may be offered to you automatically by your lecturer without the need to apply.

In most cases, exams and tests do not allow resubmission. However, you may be able to request a further assessment instead. If approved, this will usually involve a different set of questions. These options are only available where permitted.

To check what applies to your assessment, read your course information on Canvas or speak with your lecturer.

To apply:

  • Complete the Assessment Concession (Resubmission or Further Assessment) Application form within five (5) working days of receiving the marked assessment.
