Programme highlights
This course is designed for people who may have no prior knowledge or experience in hairdressing and who wish to learn hairstyling and colouring skills and basic hair-cutting techniques.
When you graduate, you will have the knowledge, practical skills and attributes to contribute to the effective operation of a salon and perform limited salon and client services.
Or, you can further develop your hairdressing skills by continuing with our level 4 professional stylist programme.
You may be required to complete literacy and numeracy assessments as part of this programme.

Open Entry if the delegated authority at the campus/site is satisfied that the applicant has the capability to complete the requirements of the programme.
English language entry requirements
All applicants (international and domestic) for whom English or te reo Māori is not a first language need to provide evidence that they have the
necessary English language proficiency required for the programme.
International applicants are required to have an IELTS score of 5 (general or academic) with no individual band lower than 5 from one test taken in
the preceding two years, or an equivalent described in NZQA Rules.

Programme structure
You will need to complete the following eight courses (120 credits):
PERS3201 Professional Identity (10 credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes related to professionalism within the hairdressing industry context.
Upon the successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:
- Explain the roles, responsibilities, and attributes of a professional in the hairdressing industry
- Complete a hair service that reflects own professional identity.
PERS3202 Salon Discovery (15 credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes related to salon workflow and operations.
Upon the successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:
- Use systems to complete client bookings in a hairdressing salon
- Discuss policy and practices within salon services
- Communicate with diverse clients in a professional context.
PERS3203 The Art of Hair Design (20 credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes related to theoretical and practical aspects of hair design.
Upon the successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:
- Complete the consultation process to inform design decisions in a hairdressing context
- Apply design principles to long and short hairstyles to an industry standard
- Recommend products and home haircare for clients.
PERS3204 Reformation Basics (15 credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes relevant to the theoretical and practical aspects of reformation services and processes in hairdressing.
Upon the successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:
- Explain reformation processes relevant to a hairdressing context
- Follow instructions in a hairdressing context
- Assist with chemical reformation services in a hairdressing context.
PERS3205 Introduction to Sculpture (15 credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to demonstrate practical haircutting skills.
Upon the successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:
- Describe the principles and practices of haircutting
- Explain culturally safe behaviours and professional practices in a hairdressing context
- Apply technical haircutting skills to a hairdressing industry standard.
PERS3206 Colour Basics (20 credits)
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes relevant to chemical services.
Upon the successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:
- Explain colour and decolouring processes relevant to a hairdressing context.
- Complete colouring services to an industry standard under supervision.
PERS3207 Client Journey (15 credits)
Pre-requisites: PERS3201-6
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to work in a professional hairdressing context.
Upon the successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:
- Demonstrate professional behaviour and skills to hairdressing industry standards during a client's journey
- Reflect on professional behaviour and skills required to meet hairdressing industry standards during a client's journey.
PERS3208 Grand Finale (10 credits)
Pre-requisites: PERS3207
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to present a professional portfolio of hairstyles.
Upon the successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:
- Design a collection of hair styles in response to a theme
- Present a collection of hair styles to a professional standard.

Fees Free scheme: Free study for the first or final year of your Level 3 or above qualification may be available under the Government’s Fees Free study scheme. Visit feesfree.govt.nz for eligibility criteria and more information. Students must be eligible to study as a domestic student. Note: The Government has announced that Fees Free for the first year of study will finish at the end of 2024. A final-year Fees Free scheme will replace it, starting from January 2025. Learners who have already used Fees Free in their first year of study won’t be able to access Fees Free under the new final-year policy.
