Programme highlights

This programme is designed for people with prior knowledge of hairstyling and colouring tasks and basic hair-cutting techniques, who wish to develop skills and knowledge to become a professional hairstylist.

You will graduate with the knowledge, skills, and attributes to provide integrated fashion services as a professional hairstylist and will have hands-on experience for real clients in an Auckland salon or in MIT's very own salon Hair at MIT.

Entry requirements

To be admitted to this programme, applicants must hold one of the following:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 3); or
  • an equivalent qualification.
International applicants:

International applicants are required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 (general or academic) with no individual band lower than 5 from one test taken in the preceding two years, or an equivalent described in NZQA Rules.

Special & discretionary admission

Any ākonga who is 20 years of age or older and has not reached the general admission requirements for their intended programme is eligible for Special Admission. Te Pūkenga works with the ākonga to ensure they are prepared for their intended programme. Any ākonga who is not yet 20 years of age and has not reached the general admission requirements for their intended programme may be eligible for Discretionary Admission. In assessing whether to grant Discretionary Admission, the delegated authority focuses on the applicant’s level of preparedness for their intended programme.

You will need to complete the below eight courses (120 credits):

PERS4201 Professional stylist attributes (10 credits)

The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to understand the intersection between personal and professional self, and communicate effectively in the hairdressing industry.

Upon the successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:

  • Evaluate personal attributes in preparation for entering the hairdressing profession
  • Examine salon culture and the implications for hairdressers and their clients
  • Demonstrate effective communication to complete a client consultation in a professional hairdressing context.

PERS4202 Sculpture (20 credits)

The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to perform foundation scissor cuts, razor and clipper services on a diverse range of clients.

Upon the successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:

  • Perform a consultation and hair and scalp analysis to inform cutting for diverse hair types
  • Demonstrate safe cutting using scissors, texturizing scissors, razor, and clippers to complete the five foundation forms on diverse hair
    types.

PERS4203 The art of advanced hair design (15 credits)

The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to perform advanced hair design using wet and dry styling.

Upon the successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:

  • Apply the consultation process to inform design decisions for a styling service in a professional hairdressing context
  • Apply advanced design techniques to an industry standard to long and short-fashion hairstyles for diverse clients.

PERS4204 Reformation designs (15 credits)

The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to perform reformation services on a variety of hair types.

Upon the successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:

  • Justify reformation service decisions for diverse scenarios in a professional hairdressing context
  • Perform a consultation to inform reformation services to meet client needs in a professional hairdressing context
  • Perform reformation services safely on a variety of hair types to an industry standard.

PERS4205 Advanced colour design (20 credits)

The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to perform reformation services on a variety of hair types.

Upon the successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:

  • Justify colour service decisions for diverse scenarios
  • Perform a consultation to inform colour services to meet client needs
  • Perform colour services safely on a variety of hair types to industry standard.

PERS4206 Fashion colour and sculpture (15 credits)

Course specific requirements: Ākonga will complete a minimum of 40 hours in a real-world context.

The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to perform a range of fashion colouring and cutting.

Upon the successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:

  • Investigate current fashion technique’s for cut and colour services in a professional hairdressing context
  • Perform consultation, fashion cutting, and colouring services to an industry standard for a range of hair types and clients.

PERS4207 Advanced client journey (15 credits)

The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to work in a professional hairdressing context.

Upon the successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:

  • Integrate professional behaviour and skills to an industry standard during the client’s journey in a professional hairdressing context
  • Reflect on the development of competencies in a professional hairdressing context
  • Apply strategies to engage with a diverse range of clients in a hairdressing context.

PERS4208 Advanced Grand Finale (10 credits)

The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, skills, and attributes to synthesise learning to present avant-garde styles to a professional hairdressing standard.

Upon the successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:

  • Investigate avant-garde styles to inform cutting and colour decision making in a professional hairdressing context
  • Apply avant-garde cut and colour styles in a professional hairdressing context
  • Present the hairdressing design and creation journey of a hairdressing client for an audience.

Further training or study

This qualification can lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Advanced Colouring Skills) (Level 5) and the New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Advanced Cutting Skills) (Level 5).

Graduates will have the knowledge and skills required to work independently as a professional hairstylist within a commercial environment under broad
guidance.
