Maritime New Zealand

Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) is the national maritime regulatory, compliance and response agency. MNZ is responsible for, amongst others, NZ seafarer qualifications framework and standards, and issuing of seafarer's certificates.


The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) is responsible for managing the NZ Qualifications Framework, administering the secondary school system, qualifications recognition and standard-setting for some specific units and independent quality assurance of non-university education providers.

Nautical Institute

The Nautical Institute is an international representative body for maritime professionals involved in the control of sea-going ships. NZMS is an accredited provider of the Nautical Institute Dynamic Positioning (DP) courses.

SeaWays Limited

SeaWays Consultants (SC) is an Australian company providing quality training, auditing, assessing and general consultancy to the towage sector. NZMS and SeaWays Limited are undertaking a joint venture providing the SeaWays Tugmaster Training programmes.

GlobalMet (Global Maritime Education & Training Association)

GlobalMET was formed to promote, develop and support, in the spirit of cooperation, the common interests of its members in all matters concerning the development and quality of maritime education and training. NZMS has a lifetime membership with GlobalMet.

IMETA (International Maritime Education and Training Australia)

The IMETA Group has been providing maritime education, training, consultancy, certification and educational services, all under a single roof. NZMS has a training agreement with IMETA.

Ports of Auckland Ltd

Supports the training of all maritime professionals and works with NZMS to provide secure housing of lifeboats, access to a mooring shed and to port facilities when requested and provides guest speakers when requested.

International Marine Simulator Forum

The IMSF is an organization for professionals involved in the advancement of maritime education, training and research through the use of simulation. NZMS is a lifetime member.

LINZ (Land Information New Zealand)

LINZ generously provide electronic charts (teaching material) and support to NZMS.

Environment Southland

Environment Southland generously supports students with scholarships each year.

Indopacific Education Services

The authorised Education Consultant for Manukau Institute of Technology with an exclusive right to recruit international marine engineering students from India into the New Zealand Maritime School.

IMLA (International Maritime Lecturers Association)

IMLA is a no-border forum: a round table for discussions on sea-related issues formed by teachers and other interested parties from all over the world dedicated to mediating in the Maritime Education and Training (MET) process. NZMS is a lifetime member.

NZMPA (New Zealand Maritime Pilots Association)

NZMS is an associated member.

VIKING is the leading Cruise Ship and Superyacht Crew Management specialists primarily offering career opportunities globally for Officers & Crew of all positions. Viking Recruitment awards an annual prize to a student meeting set criteria.

Coastal Oil Logistics (COLL)

Coastal Oil Logistics Limited specializes in petroleum product tanker scheduling and management of port-related commercial matters on behalf of the four major oil companies in New Zealand. COLL generously offers sponsorship for a student.

NZ Merchant Service Guild

The Guild is the union representing maritime pilots, masters, deck officers, tug masters, launch masters and shore-based personnel who hold maritime qualifications and work in a supervisory capacity. NZMSG generously offers sponsorship for a student.

New Zealand Shippers' Council

The New Zealand Shippers' Council (NZSC) is the principal association representing New Zealand's major cargo owners including many of the country's biggest exporters and importers. The New Zealand Shipping Council generously awards prizes to our supply chain management graduates each year. The council also contribute to material development and assists us in keeping our qualifications current and fresh.

NZMS enjoy a long relationship providing customised training to industry staff through Shipping New Zealand each year. We also have a training partnership providing extended, online study.

Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT)

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in New Zealand Inc. provides an authoritative voice for over 1200 practitioners. This ensures our views are sought by central and local government and other forums or interest groups in matters that impact the industry. CILT supports NZMS qualifications and provides membership to graduates.

Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders Association(CBAFF)

NZMS enjoy a long relationship providing customised training to staff at Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders in dangerous goods and IATA.

International Air Transport Association(IATA)

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is the trade association for the world's airlines, representing some 260 airlines or 83% of total air traffic. IATA supports many areas of aviation activity and helps formulate industry policy on critical aviation issues. NZMS are an accredited trainer delivering the IATA qualification. We are the approved examination centre for New Zealand.
