Course structure

  • The concept of a PLC.
  • Hardwiring associated with a PLC.
  • Ladder logic programming.
  • Comparison of the key programming languages listed in IEC 61131‐3 with ladder logic.
  • Binary coded decimal as a means of transferring numerical data to and from a PLC.
  • Common industrial analogue and digital input and output modules and typical applications of each
    module.
  • Field bus systems at an introductory level.
  • SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) at an introductory level.

Typical industrial projects form approximately one third of the course work. Modern Allen Bradley PLCs are used on the course.

Unit Standard

This course satisfies the requirements of Unit Standard 11579 (Level 6, Credits 15).
