“I chose to study at MIT after attending an open day and meeting the lecturers who I felt could help me get the right start in my career. It was a great choice. During my studies for a Bachelor of Information Systems, I gained expert knowledge, tools and valuable industry experience through an internship. I’m dyslexic but the open learning style at MIT allowed me to overcome any potential disadvantage from this.

Everyone I graduated with got jobs quickly, and there are so many opportunities with ICT in New Zealand and overseas. I’m working as a web developer, which I love. Thanks to what I learnt at MIT I can quickly pick up new technologies and techniques, and use them effectively in my job.

“It’s very practical at MIT and that’s what I love about it. Learning is very engaging because we’re always very involved, it was very hands-on. What’s being taught to you is exactly what you need when you go out into the world when you get that job.

From the beginning, you’re in a position to get to know a lot of interesting people and form relationships with not only the students but with the lecturers.

I wanted to actually do something, not just be in an office. Now I can do something good for the community, helping people make the most of their lives. Helping them help themselves I love that.

“I began studying for my certificate in plumbing and gasfitting at MIT instead of doing year 13 at school, and I’m so glad I did. It offered great facilities and our learning was very hands-on, which made it fun. We also had great support throughout from our tutors, who were mostly ex-tradesmen. Their strong industry connections meant we had a head-start when it came to securing a job after graduating. 

I got a job before I had even completed my studies. It has a lot of variety including, plumbing, gas fitting, drain laying, roofing, driving diggers, and lifts, as well as organising jobs. Thanks to the support of my MIT tutors I’ve also participated in the Worldskills competition. 

If you’re considering MIT, I’d say go for it, it can really take you places. You’ll be well qualified and prepared for the workplace.”

I loved that MIT gave me the flexibility to study while still being a full-time mum. I knew it was the right choice after doing a feasibility study of tertiary institutes in Auckland and MIT came out on top. It also helped me kick off my studies with a free office administration course while deciding my career prospects.

I’ve always been a people person with a goal of entering a management role, so HR seemed like a great fit. The practical elements of the course made my learning meaningful and through the internship programme I was offered a job.

I work as an associate recruitment consultant. It’s an extremely fulfilling role which includes, sourcing and building relationships with candidates, advertising vacancies, managing interviews, and negotiating contract terms.

During my studies, the lecturers provided professional guidance and they continue to give me valuable career support.
