Contribute positively to the development of te reo kia tika, kia rere, kia Māori.

This qualification is intended for those who have an intermediate-level understanding of, and ability in the use of te reo and have a personal and/or professional interest in te reo Māori.

You will gain the skills and knowledge to communicate in te reo with some independence and confidence in everyday whānau, marae, social/community, workplace and/or academic contexts; and in Māori environments where you feel comfortable.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet the following entry requirements

60 credits in Te Reo Māori at level 2 on the NZQF or established equivalency. Applicants will sit an assessment test to ensure correct level placement. Note: an inability to answer questions will not exclude an applicant from the programme. It will only be used to ensure correct level placement.

Meet the English Proficiency Outcomes as stated below in accordance with the NZQF Programme Approval and Accreditation Rules 2013 if ones first language is not English or who come from a country where the language of instruction is not English and are enrolling as a permanent resident.

Provisional entry

Students who have attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the minimum entry requirements for a programme or training scheme may be eligible to be enrolled. Such decisions must consider any applicable pre-requisites and will be made by the Head of School. Students who have not attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the required minimum entry requirements may also be eligible to be enrolled in exceptional circumstances where they can demonstrate capability for study at the required level. Such decisions must consider any applicable pre-requisites and will be made by the Head of School.

Programme structure

You will need to complete the below four courses (60 credits):

672.304 Mana Tangata 3 (15 credits)

Use Te Reo vocabulary and grammatical structures at an intermediate level as an expression of mana tangata.

672.305 Mana Whenua 3 (15 credits)

Use Te Reo Māori at an intermediate-level to show an understanding of their connections to the land and the environment, prominent places, people, histories and stories, as an expression of mana whenua.

672.306 Mana Reo 3 (15 credits)

Use Te Teo Māori at an intermediate-level in selected contexts to develop a growing knowledge base of, and an emerging respect for Te Reo, as an expression of mana reo.

672.307 Mana Ao Tūroa 3 (15 credits)

Use Te Reo Māori at an intermediate-level to achieve tasks and guide others in specified contexts as an expression of mana ao tūroa.

MIT is becoming Te Pūkenga

Vocational education in Aotearoa is changing to better meet the needs of learners like you.

As part of this transformational change, MIT will next year become fully part of Te Pūkenga, a national network delivering skills training in a wide range of locations throughout Aotearoa. This means that while you’re applying with MIT now, from Semester 1, 2023 when you enrol you’ll become a Te Pūkenga learner.

The new system has the success and wellbeing of learners at its heart, and a review of all programmes is currently underway to help support this, including the programme that you’ve enrolled with.
