Course structure

  • The concept of a PLC
  • Hardwiring associated with a PLC
  • Ladder logic programming
  • Comparison of the key programming languages listed in IEC 61131‐3 with ladder logic
  • Binary coded decimal as a means of transferring numerical data to and from a PLC
  • Common industrial analogue and digital input and output modules and typical applications of each
    module
  • Field bus systems at an introductory level
  • SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) at an introductory level.

Typical industrial projects form approximately one third of the course work. Modern Allen Bradley PLCs are used on the course.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Explain operation of a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) and its use in industry
  2. Hardwire a PLC and apply ladder logic programming to perform simple automation tasks
  3. Compare the key programming languages listed in IEC 61131-3 with ladder logic and understand their application in industry
  4. Apply common industrial analogue and digital input/output modules
  5. Explain field bus systems and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition)
